I never understood why data rates more than 64Kbps are important for handsets in the next few years. After all, the number of bits needed to fill a typical handset screen is more than 20 times less than the number needed to fill a typical PC screen. So a 64Kbps data rate is equivalent to well over 1Mbps in the PC space -- that's about what the average cable or DSL modem delivers.
