The comment about the airlines really needs a bit more understanding.

While the "airlines" overall have lost money since 1970, SOME airlines have made quite decent profits.

Remember that "airlines" includes all the defunct, bankrupt and other airlines which have passed from this world, including the ones which lost billions in the wake of deregulation and never recovered.

Much of the blame for that situation can be placed on the rigid cost structures and rigid attitudes which many airlines could not shed after the rules were changed. The ones that figured out how to be flexible survived and prospered. The others bled enough red ink to tarnish the entire industry for years.
