Happy New Year!
I tried to resist, but I just couldn't help but plug MSFT's achilles heel. MSFT is one of the best managed companies that I know of, and it shows in their execution. But, after you get so big you become a target. I am even gunning for them. I believe that NuoMedia has cloned nearly all of the functionality of Exchange server and Outlook 2000 for the retail consumer and the SOHO market. We have cloned over 70% of the practical functionality of the Office 2000 suite. By altering the business model, we are able to give away all of this stuff for free, over the Web complete with file storage, with no obtrusive ads. Now, MSFT is quite capable of doing this, but not without substantial disruption of extant cashflows. Any company of MSFT's stature is highly reliant on market valuation for compensation and acquisition currency. Any disruption of these cash flows, be it real or percieved, is anathema to analysts, hence highly undesirable to the behemoth known as Microsoft.
