Component shortages exist for all sorts of components not just microprocessors. I tried to buy some low ESR tantalum caps (AVX, nichicon or from anybody). Lead time I am told is 12 weeks to 6 months (it would be shorter if my name was Luscent but I am sure they are feeling the pinch as well - not to mention prices being higher). Look at any piece of high frequency digital electronics, those little surface mount tantalum caps are all over the place - an existing design can't be manufactured without them.
