A friend of mine who has a few hundred thousand dollars in paper profits on AOL told me yesterday that he was getting ready to buy more. I ventured that he might consider diversifying. As an example, I pointed out that Alcoa, an old-fashioned smokestack company, had outperformed AOL in 1999... "Diversification," he answered confidently, "is for people who don't know what they're doing... I'm sticking to my plan."
