'87 was a one-day, 30% drop. We haven't even seen a third of that drop in three days.

'73-74 was a grinding, slow decline, just a bit at a time, day after day for months.

This appears to be a simple correction. The market blowing off steam. We can point to any number of times that has happened in recent years for drops of 10-20% from the high.
