Oakley successful in major counterfeit operation bust
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1997--In its ongoing effort to identify and prosecute criminal counterfeiting activity, Oakley Inc Wednesday announced it has successfully uncovered a major counterfeit operation in Carson, Calif.
The company said the magnitude of the raid, including the seizure of counterfeit product and equipment and the arrest of the operation owner on felony charges, makes it the company's most significant anti-counterfeiting outcome to date.
On April 17, 1997, search warrants were served on five Carson locations resulting in the seizure of a large supply of counterfeit Oakley items and computerized embroidery machines, printing equipment and other manufacturing machinery used in the production of counterfeit sunglasses, apparel and packaging. The items and the equipment seized have a total estimated value of $10 million. The counterfeit operation was exposed by the company in cooperation with private investigators and the City of Carson Sheriff's office.
"We are very proud that the lead for this investigation was generated by Oakley only six weeks ago. Our success again exemplifies our vigilant efforts to protect the integrity of Oakley's reputation for quality products that we have worked so hard to earn," said Jim Jannard, chairman and president of Oakley.
Oakley is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of high-performance eyewear.
