Sun's McNealy Presents the Networking of Everyday Devices with Echelon's LONWORKS(R) System
CES Keynote Speech and 'The .com Home' Exhibit Bring the Connected Home to Life
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2000--Scott McNealy, chairman and chief executive officer of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) wowed the audience at the 2000 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with his presentation on how connectivity to anything, from anywhere, at anytime will transform our lives.

During his keynote address Thursday evening, McNealy described how a web browser on a digital mobile phone with a Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) micro-browser could interact with Sun's ''.com Home'' exhibit that was networked with Echelon Corporation's (Nasdaq:ELON - news) LONWORKS® system.

''People like to talk about everyBODY getting connected to the Internet, but actually, the bigger market is getting everyTHING connected to the Internet,'' said McNealy. ''Everything with a digital electrical heartbeat is going to be connected to the Internet. By bringing everyday devices to the Internet, Echelon's LONWORKS system is central to making this happen.''

The LONWORKS network in Sun's ''.com Home'' exhibit includes a networked CeTeLaB AB door bell/door chime, an electronic door lock powered by an Echelon LonPoint® module, and a Jini proxy based on Echelon's LNS(TM) network operating system. These technologies work together to bring convenience to life.

For example, a mobile phone could be used to ring the LONWORKS front door bell, causing a message to be displayed on a Web-enabled cell phone. In response, the phone's keypad can be used to command the LONWORKS door to open, allowing a parent to monitor his or her children after school or to remotely authorize entry into a home by a repair service.

''Scott's presentation and 'The .com Home' exhibit underscore how powerful connectivity to everyday devices is. This is just one small example of how connecting to everyday devices from anywhere at anytime offers new conveniences to consumers and new, exciting business opportunities to service providers,'' said Ken Oshman, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Echelon.

''Our LONWORKS system combined with Sun's Java platform and Jini connection technology provides the suite of tools and technologies needed to deploy value-added services to networked devices in the home. Together, we are making the networked home a reality.''

The world's largest annual trade show for consumer technology, the 2000 International CES showcases the who, what, where, and why of the consumer technology industry, featuring industry visionaries and the latest business models and consumer applications. Exhibitors include manufacturers of consumer technology hardware, content media, technology delivery systems, and related products.

The 2000 CES conference program includes more than 130 sessions and more than 300 expert speakers uncovering the newest trends, strategies, and profit opportunities in the consumer technology industry.
