Imation and Presstek to Develop New Digital Halftone Imaging Solution
NEW YORK, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Imation Corp. (NYSE:IMN), the imaging and information company recently spun-off from 3M, and Presstek, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRST) today announced that Presstek is the first equipment manufacturer to be qualified to develop imagers for Matchprint(TM) Laser Proof, Imation's, new digital halftone proofing system. Presstek, based in Hudson, New Hampshire, is a leading manufacturer of thermal imaging devices for computer-to-plate direct imaging.
``Imation's goal is to bring high-quality customer-defined solutions to market quickly,'' said John Pohl, marketing director for Imation's Printing and Publishing Systems. ``Presstek's imaging hardware for computer-to-plate workflows, added to Imation's color proofing and workflow automation leadership, promises to deliver a solution that meets the contract proofing needs of trade shops, printers and publishers moving quickly toward increasingly automated workflows.''
``The imaging equipment being developed by Presstek for use with Matchprint Laser Proof is further evidence that Presstek's digital imaging technology is expanding its use in a broader range of graphic arts applications in the multi-billion dollar printing and publishing market,'' said Robert Verrando, president and COO of Presstek.
A first-of-its-kind digital contract proofing system ideal for the rapidly growing computer-to-plate market, the Matchprint laser proofing system will combine the repeatability and consistency of the industry standard Matchprint color proofing system with the latest digital imaging technology. The Matchprint laser proofing system will be the first digital contract proofing system designed to be imaged from a common raster image processor (RIP) with a metal platesetter. This will result in one-to-one dot fidelity with the final print output and dramatic improvements in productivity and output predictability.
Presstek and Imation expect to coordinate release of both the imager and Matchprint Laser Proof products in third quarter 1997.
Presstek, Inc., founded in 1987, has developed PEARL(R), a patented, proprietary non-photographic, toxic-free, digital imaging and printing plate technology for the printing and graphic arts industries on a worldwide basis. PEARL's thermal laser diode system is capable of imaging various types of Presstek printing plates either off-press or on-press to produce high quality, full-color lithographic printed materials. Presstek is also engaged in the development of additional products and applications that incorporate its proprietary PEARL technologies and consumables, including both computer-to- plate and other direct-to-press applications.
Imation supplies a variety of products and services worldwide for the imaging and information industry. The company manufactures and markets digital and conventional color proofing systems, including the industry- standard Matchprint color proofing system, imagesetting materials, printing plates, graphic arts films, digital prepress software, software for digital communications services, and carbonless paper products to customers worldwide. All Imation products are supported by a worldwide customer service organization. In 1996, the company generated revenues of $2.3 billion. Imation employs approximately 9,400 people and is based in Oakdale, Minn.
