Meridian Announces New Discovery in the North
Turtle Bayou Field

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2000--The Meridian Resource Corporation (NYSE:TMR - news) today
announced the successful completion of the Breaux No. 1 well in the North Turtle Bayou Field, Terrebonne Parish, La. The
well, drilled in a fault block adjacent to the Thibodaux No. 1 and 3 wells which were completed in 1999, has been placed on
production at a rate of 15.3 million cubic feet of gas per day plus 576 barrels of oil per day. The flowing tubing pressure was
11,100 psi on an 18/64th inch choke and the shut in tubing pressure was recorded at 12,870 psi. Total production from the
three (3) field wells now exceeds 50 million cubic feet (equivalent) of gas per day.

The well was completed from the Operc B sand which contained over 143 feet of pay (72 net feet) with perforations from
17,666 to 17,676. Production was also logged in the Operc. A sand with approximately 56 feet of pay (36 net feet) which will
be completed after depletion of the B sand reserves. Additional drilling is contemplated in the Breaux Unit at a later date to test
the Operc 5 sand currently producing in the Thibodaux No. 1 well. Meridian holds approximately 90% of the working interest
in the Breaux unit with the remainder held by private interests.
