Well, I think the lifelessness of her characters has much to do with the fact that she was a truly terrible writer. And even worse, all of the "good guys" had to be pretty much cookie-cutter exponents of her ideas, which is bound to make 'em more or less the same and therefore uninteresting. AND she had no sense of humor whatsoever, which is in my view a fatal flaw in anyone. Her protagonists, like herself, are as dreary as her "philosophy".
