GM near deal with AOL, Ford said in talks

January 7, 2000 01:55 PM
DETROIT, Jan 7 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. GM said on Friday it is close to a deal with America Online Inc. AOL to establish a link on the Internet portal which would provide product information to vehicle owners and prospective buyers.

"We're having discussions with them. The details are being worked out," GM spokesman Pat Morrissey told Reuters. "It would be a means to get consumers access to product information."

In addition, Ford Motor Co. F is close to a similar deal with Yahoo Inc. YHOO , the Detroit Free Press reported on Friday. Ford officials declined to comment on the report.

The automakers' deals with the two major portals is yet another attempt to reach consumers over the Internet, where they increasingly turn for product and price information before buying a new car or truck.
