Hi Westmoreland,
My first post on this thread .. my second anywhere .. been lurking since Oct 99. I noted your Presario lockup problem. Since I'm a hardware guy, I always blame problem on software first and only reluctantly admit hardware might be the problem .. haha.

If you are running Windows 95/98, the problem might be fixed by reserving resources for the "system kernel". Recommend you download, install, and run Cacheman which is available from ...
outertech.com

The program is also on zdnet.com and has been frequently downloaded. I had a problem with audio playbacks being interrupted .. and Cacheman fixed this problem .. for the most part. (I'm disappointed that my Dell Dimension XPS T and Windows 98 SE doesn't do a better job of multitasking .. but as I said, I blame the software.)

The program changes three lines in c:\windows\system.ini that assigns values to minfilecache, maxfilecache, and chunksize. You might want to make a copy of this file before you run Cacheman. It also manipulates file cache variables related to name cache and directory cache, but I have not been able to find where.

In summary, I believe the program is very safe and can only help .. even if it doesn't fix the lockup problem. If you want detailed help, let me know.

Ron
