I find that a little hard to believe, as an MDR estimate I saw was considerably higher than that. >

Sorry Greater Fool, MDR is way off base on this one. MDR totally underestimates Intel's manufacturing efficiency, and assumes that all wafer fabs are equivalent.

A year ago I got the following Celeron cost breakdown :
Pkg -$7, test -$1,Chip -$16, Misc $1.

I would guess that today the Celeron cost is < $20.

Unfortunately for AMD, the K-62 package alone costs $20.

So Intel can churn out a lot of Celerons and still make a decent profit, although I grant you that a majority of the profits come from the PIII.
