NTL to Use Microsoft Platform For UK TV Services January 7, 2000

Business News Archives

British cable operator NTL Inc said on Friday it had chosen Microsoft's TV software platform to deliver enhanced interactive television services in the UK.

"The Microsoft TV platform will enhance the 'free to air' digital terrestrial TV capability of the set-top box," it said.

Services included a digital video recorder using a hard drive not a tape, e-mail and Web-browsing.

Microsoft has a five percent stake in NTL and owns nearly 30 percent of Cable and Wireless Communications Plc, the former cable market leader which NTL will buy pending a monopoly inquiry.

NTL is mainly a cable operator but said Friday's announcement refers to plans to boost its transmission of digital television channels via normal TV aerials, a delivery method used by ONdigital.

ONdigital is owned equally by Carlton Communications and Granada Group Plc.

The Microsoft platform would make it possible for set-top decoders to offer the range of interactive and Internet-related services.
