Good point, but ... you can't buy a computer from Best Buy with the Be OS already loaded, right? Folks that can't program their VCRs won't change operating systems.

Anyway, that may be beside the point. In the past, PC sales have included a large component of replacement sales. It seems to me that obsolescence is less of a factor nowadays, as the limiting factor in PC utilization is bandwidth and not processing power.

It's not black and white -- there are people that replace PCs because they have to have the faster computer, and there are people that replace PCs because they come across an application that they want to run that requires a faster processor. The former group is still around, but the latter group has been satiated for the time being. I certainly don't think the former group will increase their buying to compensate for the latter's satiety.

The key point being that one driver for sales is receding, and I don't see the other drivers increasing to compensate.
