Though small to midsized cities seemed to be the focus last year, the recently announced acquisition of operating licenses in Denver and Pittsburgh seems to suggest that there is no intent to stick to small cities. I think the Cricket model will work equally well or even better in larger cities.

On the other hand, there is no effort being made to serve relatively sparsely populated areas as I would imagine Orange County would be. The reason, of course, is that more infrastructure per subscriber is required to build for coverage rather than capacity. Ergo, costs per subscriber would be higher in a sparser population. Harvey White's response to a question about barriers to entry for potential competitors referred to that difference. While others are building for coverage, we are building for capacity, and they can't just change their strategy overnight.

I found the observation that Leap was attempting to cover only 60% of the population in Chattanooga and expected a similar proportion in other cities to be illuminating.
