ML has a an online alternative to their 1% Advantage, ML Direct. ML Direct offers $29.95 trades, great for people who do not place many trades per year. Here's the page to find out about it:

mldirect.ml.com

I telephoned ML a few weeks ago to ask about the program. Since I have an existing, traditional ML account already, I can bridge the two and transfer securities and cash online from one (traditional or ML Direct) account to the other. VISA, checks, the same things available to clients with regular are available to ML Direct customers. Those of us with existing ML accounts can opt for new checks and VISA cards for our Direct account or just use the checks and VISA with out regular (what I'm doing since cash can be shifted back and forth online).

This new ML option is great for people like me who have existing ML accounts, rarely buy or sell in our ML accounts (due to resenting the traditional ML commissions for stocks we have researched on our own), but are reluctant to close them since ML has, over the years, become our bank.

I won't go into my reasons why, but I do _not_ want to sever my 20+ years banking ties with ML. Had ML offered their ML Direct when Schwab first got started, ML would have gotten all my business.

Lynn
