Off topic -- Saturn Day rant (First installment)...

This has been a week that could't end soon enough: Tue-Thu blood letting and Fri LU downgrade.

It seems like every year for as long as I can remember the market had a good 'first week' and everyone who could find an audience was proclaiming that "As the first week in January, the whole year goes!" Well now we've just finished a crappy first week and I haven't heard the expected "We're in for a shitty year!" even once.

An observation: We had an incredible 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Just how lucky do we think we can get. Our company is near a triple digit PE and we've seen five great years. A pause to catch our breath would not be unexpected here. Invest with greed, but don't invest with blind greed: be sure the safety-net is secure.

I'm not predicting gloom: I'm bracing for it. My time horizon is quite long and a typical tough period of 10 to 20 months won't cause serious damage to the next 5 to 10 year's performance. As usual, nimble traders will easily beat my buy-and-hold returns, but when they do, they earn it and deserve their rewards.

Cheers, PW.
