mornin' HM-K NIMA stands for National Imagery and Mapping Association - and the 15 word description is - They are an amalgam of formerly separate (to some extent) US gov. entities with overlapping interests and uses for maps of every conceivable geo-spatial configuration - who are operating more jointly in an era of us gov. belt tightening - the net result of which was them noticing and trying to capitalize on the industry's attempts (OGC) to standardize GIS software systems and maximize their interoperability - basically the same sort of needs and problems facing NIMA.
