Duff, your problem is widespread: I have Win 98 with 96MB
RAM. When I boot up, Norton Utilities usually shows 220 files open. After surfing [several windows, but no fancy stuff] Norton sometimes shows over 350 files open, even though I have the same number of programs running as immediately after booting up. Sometimes the web is very slow after prolonged surfing. I reboot and the problem is fixed.

I think some programs are sloppy and don't close files that
are no longer needed. I have a sneaking suspicion that the
cheap Winmodem in my eMachine may be one of the culprits.
