Goutama,

<Jim, re:So if Dirk lead the Athlon design team then he's gets most of the credit from me.

True, but it wouldn't have been possible if the ship was not kept afloat while being under the most intense competitive pressure from one of the premier company in the industry.>

I think there are two people who get lion share of the credit for this.

The first one, IMHO, is Sanders - this guy is so focussed on the PC market he bet the company on it and was willing to lose EVERYTHING. It was a big bet and clearly he came out ahead.

The second one was Raza - the technology management including hiring the key people and bringing in creativity (AMD can proudly say Athlon is not a me too chip because of Raza - the best I can tell, most people at AMD at that time including Vinod Dham wanted to clone Intel - Raza wanted to be ahead and different) and putting in the right processes on the design and manufacturing sides.

IMHO, Dirk is clearly a sharp guy but he was implementing the vision and strategy set by the top guys. Leaders get blamed when things go wrong - we might as well give them credit when it is due.

Chuck
