OT - RRSPs & Foreign Content

For any other northerners out there, I just found out some helpful info this week re foreign content in our RRSPs. Up until now I had a pool of cash in CDN $ and bought/sold US stocks and options from it. Each time I bought and sold I would lose a couple percent on the exchange from CDN cash to US dollars (when buying the US stocks/calls), then back to CDN cash (after selling the US stocks/calls).

This week I just found out that (OK, so I'm slow) you can park your cash in a US dollar money market fund and use it to purchase your US stocks and calls. Then, when you sell the stock/calls the proceeds go back into the US money market fund. So, you don't lose exchanging dollars back and forth between CDN and US. Just talked to a TD Greenline guy this morning and he confirmed (he looked it up) that cash in the US dollar money market fund is NOT considered foreign content. So now, I will leave cash there and won't have to worry whether or not it's above the 20% book value. FWIW.

PS. Suuuuuure hope we get the foreign content boosted to 30%
