holy cow! sheesh, i'm blushing now. that's quite a statement. i think that the thread is just filled with super nice people. but thanks! :)

malachy, sr. is definitely a lost soul. angela endures a bitter life, but has her moments of being positive. the thing that was confounding to me was that throughout angela's ashes, frank(ie) was able to maintain and move forward and overcome apparently without much bitterness. inspiring, actually. but as we get to the second book, 'tis, and his life gets better economically and socially and professionally...he seems actually to get more bitter. little things bother him more and he can't really keep it together sometimes.

i thought i was reading the story of someone who could rise above, like "shawshank redemption" etc. but didn't find the theme to keep carrying through.
