I was in Peru last year visiting the Timauacuan civilization and the spaceman theory is alive and well there. I think it evolved because this ancient civilization was so advanced scientifically and the current residents (which are, shall we say "scientifically challenged") have no other explanation. Seriously its like planet of the apes or something - an amazing civilization and poof! they were gone. The Kon-tiki statue (called a Stille by the locals) is in Peru, created by this civilization. Thor Heyerdahl named his vessel after the Kon-tiki - I didn't even know it was in Peru or what the history was. I think when I heard the term "tiki" I assumed polynesia.
