RE>>What exactly is the standard ..individuals , the church, intercessors, God's elect !! <<
Good question...
The word "standard" appear twice in Isaiah (KJV) but you will be shocked to see that it means two completely different things in both places.
The first one is the Hebrew word:
05127 nuwc noos
The number there is "Strong's Numbering" everyone should get one of those and also a Bible with the numbers under the words... Or download the free program " ONLINE BIBLE "
The word appears 161 times in the Old Testament.
Our "English" friends in day gone by translated it this way:
FLEE - 142 times FLEE AWAY - 12 times and..abated 1, displayed 1, flight 1, hide 1, flee out 1, lift up a standard 1, variant 1
As you can see this was the only place they translated the original Hebrew into 3 words..
Lift up a Standard err... ok 4 words.
If they were not dead I would ask them why???
I can only GUESS ....
Look at the verse as translated in English:
Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
If you use the meaning of the Greek word ESCAPE by FLEEING the verse is just like what Jesus said in this verse about the destruction of Jerusalem in His "generation"
Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
This is Jesus teaching that when the "enemy would come in like a flood" in the destruction of Israel in 70 AD His Elect should pray to be counted worthy of the "STANDARD" God would raise up... The way of escape from physical harm....
We know that only John of the Apostles escaped being Martyred.. so who then could Jesus have referred to when He said this:
Luke 21:17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. 18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish. 19 In your patience possess ye your souls. 20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
Jesus must be talking about the rest of His elect other than the apostles but to those who would still be alive in 70 AD and living in Jerusalem...
======= Believing Jews !!! =======
Concerning praying that you would be worthy to be a benefactor of that "STANDARD" or "WAY OF ESCAPE" you would need to be one who knew what Jesus meant in this verse:
Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Do you see what it says in brackets Greg?
==== whoso readeth, let him understand ====
How many of God's children do in fact understand... guess what you don't need to.. it was to those in 70AD and a part of the "Standard" God raised up for them:
Luke 21:21 Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. 22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
We don't live in Judea anyway.... but we do have an enemy as well... you are right it is "Spiritual Darkness"
God also raises for us a standard even as it is written:
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Make a way of escape = Lift up a Standard
Sometimes that way of escape is to phone your cable company and tell them you've had enough!Pull the PLUG on Satan!!!
So that is the meaning of "Raise up a standard" in Isaiah in Chapter 59
However our forefathers also used the word "standard" in Isaiah in a completely different setting....
Numbers 2:2 Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father's house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.
Greg did you ever hear that song " His BANNER over me is Love" ?
The word in numbers that was translated "standard" was not the same as the one your asking about..but very similar. I quote it to show that the English fellows used the word "standard" so people 500 years ago would know right away what was meant...
The Elect could follow the "Standard" or "Banner" to the place of their own and safety... If you were in the midst of a losing battle such as the destructions of Israel in 588 BC and 70 AD and perhaps yet again at the end of the world ( satan loosed ) You would need to know where to go to retreat and seek refuge for yourself. You would in the midst of that judgement and suffering "LOOK to the BANNER" so that your own would both protect and lead you out of the destruction that God had sent in judgement.
In Numbers the word translated "standard" is : 01714 degel deh'-gel
Translated -AV-standard 13, banner 1; 14
1) banner, standard
You can see it was translated Banner once out of 14 appearances. The word is very simple.
Here is the verse you asked about:
Isaiah 62:10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.
Isaiah as well as Ezekiel are books "primarily" concerned with the destruction of Israel in 588 BC. However there are many things in the books that fail to be fulfilled in that event alone.
Did you know that Isaiah prophesied the destruction of the Temple 40 years before it happened and so did Jesus..
God leaves patterns for us to see :-}
God is FUN !!!!
Isaiah saw the crucifixion of Jesus and recorded it in Chapter 52-53.
Isaiah also saw the Gentiles being brought in but that did not happen after the destruction of Israel in 588 but only after the one in 70 AD very interesting...
Isaiah 62:10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.
The word "translated" STANDARD in that verse is:
05251 nec nace
AV-standard 7, ensign 6, pole 2, banner 2, sail 2, sign 1; 20
1) something lifted up, standard, signal, signal pole, ensign, banner, sign, sail 1a) standard (as rallying point), signal 1b) standard (pole) 1c) ensign, signal
Do you see how the word "standard" is not so much a word concerning "escape" but would be more associated with an Emblem that proceeded a VICTORIOUS ARMY !!!
Greg , our God does indeed move in mysterious ways, and I have prayed for this thread.
Your question is not coming only of yourself but indeed points to one of the most powerful aspects of our Salvation!
Do you see above that 05251 was translated "POLE" twice instead of "standard" in the KJV Bible??
Here is one of those places:
Numbers 21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole <05251>, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
The verse could have been translated:
Isaiah 62:10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a POLE for the people.
I do indeed believe that Isaiah at this point is talking about Jesus being Lifted UP Look at the very next verse:
Isaiah 62:11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
I'm sorry but if that is not about Jesus then WHO ????
Listen to what Jesus said:
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
We can see that the POLE with the Serpent on it became the international symbol for medicine.. God had to have that pole destroyed because the people began to make it an idol.
Do you remember the story...
The people complained to Moses about being sick of eating Manna ( light bread ):
Numbers 21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
Then God sent Judgement even deadly fiery serpents:
Numbers 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
God hardened and killed many of them but to some He granted a spirit of repentance...
Numbers 21:7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
Moses prayed for the people.. he interceded for them.. even as does Jesus for His Elect.
Did you know that Jesus prays for you PERSONALLY ?
============= EVEN BY NAME ==============
and for all of us here whom He has called unto Himself!
John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
He is leading you out of this world of sin and death.
Your very name is spoken by the lips of The Christ.
The King of the Universe! Creator of Heaven and earth!
And just who is this King of the Universe..
He is the one who came to earth to save His people from their serpents ( SIN ) and so for them became a serpent (SIN and the CURSE ) and was raised upon a pole. So that he would become our STANDARD ( way of escape )
Are ALL men drawn unto Him or ALL MANNER of MEN?
Meaning Jews and Gentiles... The gentiles were not called until after the death of Jesus but not after the destruction of the Temple in 588 AD...
Isaiah saw the serpent on the pole even Jesus and said this:
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all
Paul saw it and said this:
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
God saw it and said this:
Luke 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
Numbers 21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Isaiah 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
What can we say to any man?
=============REPENT - LOOK - LIVE =============
1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Hope this helps....
............and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
