1988 Let's see, I got sick as a dog, twice. The second time sicker than I have EVER been in my life. However, because I filled my suitcase with cereal and snacks which I carried with me and ate instead of "iffy" food I did escape the major food poisoning outbreak that hit our tour group. The people we came into contact with, were, for the most part, trying to sell us stuff- LOTS of stuff- and one doesn't get the best impression of people when they are sticking stuff in your face. Sort of like judging Americans by the ones who sell at swap meets. The soot in the air caked in our noses. I hated that. Tons of pollution, air, water, land. And I had a hard time with the rampant nose picking. I'm not a big fan of germ exchanges. I'm the kind of person that opens the bathroom door with a towel, and swathes the toilet seat in tissue. We took a family out to dinner and their kid threw up in his mother's hand in the taxi on the way to the restaurant. Nobody washed their hands. AND they touched everything. THAT was China. It's not my kind of place.
