Apex, I must relay this experience even though it is not Y2K related.The other night while in bed I heard a large bang and it was loud enough to wake me up.I looked at the clock only to see it was black,no power.Due to the loudness I went to see what happened.Downstairs my thoughts of a power outage were confirmed.I grabbed a flashlight and checked the house fuse panel.....(all OK).On opening the front door to the street I see a rather large branch has fallen and it appears as though a live wire is on the pavement and I am not sure where the other end is.The whole area is black with streetlights out with the exception of sparks.The wind explained the episode. I then went to the phone which was dead.Went to fax phone and it was dead.Found my cell and the phone book and utilizing a flshlight I proceeded to find the 24 hiur emergency reporting number for power outages and proceeded to dial it fering someone or soomething may be in danger with a downed live wire or wires. Expecting to speak to someone I was completely amazed to get a recording with the usual instriuctions."Push 1 to get account info...." "Push 2 to report a power outage or and emergency...." I hit the 2 and there was a click and...."We cannot identify your phone number and require an account number to respond to your call.Please locate your latest bill and your account number is located in the upper left hand corner." My first response was.....now where is that last bill????? Wait a minuste......what the hell did I just hear?????A live line is down,I am calling a 24 hour emergency number to report it at 2:00 AM in the morning on my cell phone as both the other phones are electrically operated, in the darkness only with the light of an ever weakening flashlight and some idiot wants me to find my latest power bill??????? What brainchild developed this system I am thinking.I hang the phone up and check out on the street again.Still noone around and the line is still sparking.... I call back and sit on hold for 32 minutes only to hang up after I see the flashing amber lights through the front windows.I could only think as I ascended the stairs to return to the bed that Y2K has passed and all was well.Now we have to just figure out how to overcome the idiocy that exists every other day in that organization and give that guy who designed the phone ID system of verifying a customer a great big award for his ingenuity.
