I think it is more than that. I don't think Intel's management(or any other company's) would risk pissing off the stockholders. And, that's what they will do if they cut PIII margins too much. There is a threshold of pain that people do not cross.

I would agree if I thought Intel is at that threshold of pain. However I don't believe they are any where close. They have such a cushion built in it would take a long time for them to feel the pain. Just their stock investments in companies like CMGI or ANCR alone could keep the wolves away from the door for years.

That is why AMD can not afford to overestimate their position. From this point forward, AMD has a slim opportunity to make it and it is critical that they amass a cash reserve as quickly as possible. Ultimately I believe that is the only way that they will be able to stay in the competition.
