Methinks you're confused, Joan. Penguins don't sit on their eggs, at least in Antarctica. It's a guy thing.

The emperor of his latest title is the male emperor penguin; this paragon of paternity protects his spouse's egg by balancing it on his feet through several months of Antarctic winter. Masson shows that in many other species, fathers perform services for their offspring that are equally remarkable, if seldom as arduous. Male Japanese carp take small fry into their mouths when danger threatens. The female seahorse lays her eggs in the male's pouch, then takes off, leaving him to hatch them and nurture the young. (from nytimes.com )

The guides could probably explain egg on the natives' faces, but on their feet?

Cheers, Dan.
