SNRA--interesting piece here on the HUGE potential of mcommerce going forward

<<A report just published says that the mobile commerce market is set to soar to $200 billion by 2004. At the same time, the research says that transactions using wireless devices will approach $14 billion a year.

The report, from Strategy Analytics' Wireless Data and Computing Service, says that technology enablers will include high speed wireless networks, wireless application protocol (WAP), SIM (subscriber identification module) toolkits, dual-slot handsets, and general improvements in the wireless device user interface.

Declan Lonergan, the research firm's European director of wireless services, said that there are few industry developments that have the potential to change forever the way that consumers behave.

"Mobile commerce, however, is one of them. In the next few years, when the few remaining technology barriers have been removed, we will see wireless handsets used widely to do everything from buying train and cinema tickets to shopping for goods and services on the Internet," he said.

Lonergan added that the biggest question that remains is not how big the market opportunity will be, but what the revenue and partnership models will look like.

Successful mobile commerce applications, he said, will include electronic ticketing, vending machine payments, and, in the longer term, the use of wireless devices for online shopping and payment for various goods and services.

The report says that key drivers for the mobile commerce industry include technology advances, changing consumer behavior dynamics, and the promise of significant commercial benefits for the merchant community.

The report concludes that potential winners in the mobile commerce arena include wireless operators, online merchants, content providers, smartcard manufacturers, handset vendors and systems integrators.

Strategy Analytics says that, for those players that move quickly, and embrace the market opportunity that mobile commerce represents, the returns should be substantial.>>
