I wouldn't unload UMC if I were S3. The potential of UMC is pretty hot. Look at TSM. Compared to graphics chips, UMC is a better shot.
I've been using the Viper 2 for a while now, and its works pretty well. I had some problems with heat build up, and the computer rebooting automatically after high graphics usage, but I found that moving some boards around, and removing some networking utilities eased the load on the CPU and power supply.
I think that the next gens in mid 2000 will have substantial heat issues, even with 0.18 micron designs, without active (fan) heat dissipation devices.
Therefore, S3's move to invest in other directions is good.
besides, I like telecomm, networking, mp3, semi mfg, chips sets, etc.
