WSJ:Nine of top 10 PC makers are AMD customers now!
Gateway to Use Athlon Processors From AMD in Some of Its PCs By DEAN TAKAHASHI Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said computer maker Gateway Inc. will use AMD's Athlon microprocessors in its personal computers.
The deal marks a recovery for AMD, which lost Gateway as a top customer last year to rival chip maker Intel Corp., Santa Clara. But Gateway officials said their fourth-quarter results were hurt by a lag in supply of PC components from Intel.
Dana Krelle, vice president of marketing in AMD's computation-products group, said Gateway, San Diego, will use the Athlon in its Select PC line. That gives AMD nine of the top 10 computer makers as customers; Dell Computer Corp., Round Rock, Texas, is the sole holdout.
AMD is also expected to announce more news of growing business support for the Athlon, which matches the 800-megahertz speed of Intel's fastest chips.
Mr. Krelle said Pionex Technologies Inc., Somerset, N.J., will use the Athlon in a class of high-end computers known as workstations. 3Dlabs Inc., a San Jose graphics-chip maker, will also support AMD's processors in workstation applications, and VIA Technologies Ltd., Taiwan, is expected to announce its first chip set, which routes data within a PC, specifically designed for Athlon machines.
