Betty and Thread,

go2net.newsalert.com

I listed to the VCALL recorded at CES with Wes Brewer at the microphone. He described the landscape for the next several quarters and beyond to 2005. The general information he presented related to estimates of growth of the markets SanDisk is serving. He also presented a projection of costs for SD Memory Card stating that by 2005 these would be under $20 and perhaps close to $10/card while offering several hundred megabytes of storage capacity. And while 2005 is a ways off, this indicates that SD Memory card will be able to purchased in significant quantities by the average individual. (I would not even venture a guess as to potential unit sales.) Also, the theme that Wes repeated was that SanDisk is striving to be a low cost/cutting edge/highest quality provider of removable flash memory.

Currently pricing will remain in the $2.00 to $2.50 per megabyte at the retail level.

The interesting point he made was that in Q2 there would be a lessening of constraints on SanDisk's manufacturing capacity in Taiwan. He specifically stated that he "couldn't go into the details" during the interview, as if it were top secret.

My suspicion is that SanDisk has increased their investment in UMC by purchasing additional shares or by requesting additional manufacturing capacity at one of the two new fabs that was slated to open in Q4 of 1999 or Q1/Q2 of 2000. (I posted this information some time ago from the UMC website.) Also, my post yesterday regarding SIII's decision to sell their stake at UMC suggests that additional fab capacity may become available, although I am not sure it is geared for flash memory production.

I think it will be a fair question to ask about SanDisk's plans at UMC if there is a conference call this quarter. I know that the analysts will be hounding Eli for information in this regard given the fact that we were on allocation at the time of the Q3 conference call. This may be just what they are looking for.

Good luck to all SanDisk longs.

I have a gut feeling that January could be an exceptional month for SanDisk.
