jim, RE: They upgrade CPQ, raise questions about DELL the next day, then put out a rumor that DELL is going to suffer the same fate as GTW following their preanouncement a day earlier.

Fact vs Fiction:

Fact: Merrill Lynch raised questions about DELL's quarter last week. IMO, those questions were legitimate, as proven by Gateway's preannouncement due to a lot of the very issues that Merrill mentioned two days later.

The rest of your statement is fiction. Merrill didn't raise its rating on CPQ. Merrill has been neutral on since last summer.

Merrill was not the source of the preannouncement rumor on DELL. The whispers were coming from other analysts and the buy side community. In fact, I'm surprised that no one on the thread is at least commending the Merrill analyst for getting to the source. Merrill was the first firm out with information that DELL would NOT preannounce.

I'm not a huge fan of Merrill Lynch, but the vitrol (most of it misguided) aimed at them by this thread is absolutely comical.
