SST Expands Its High-Performance X16 Flash Memory Family January 10, 2000 3:30 AM
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10, 2000--
New 8 Mbit, 4 Mbit and 2 Mbit Density Additions to SST's
39 Series MPF Family Are Ideal Solutions for PC Peripherals,
Portable Computing and Telecommunications Applications
SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.)(Nasdaq:SSTI) today announced it has expanded its high-performance x16 flash memory product family. The new products include the 39VF800A, an 8 Mbit device, the 39VF400A, a 4 Mbit device, and the 39VF200A, a 2 Mbit device. These products are new members of the company's successful 39 series, Multi-Purpose Flash (MPF(TM)) product family, and offer fast read access times of 45 ns. The new devices are available in x16 configurations and use a single voltage supply of 2.7V to 3.6V for read, program and erase. The fast read speeds of the new devices make them ideal solutions of program code storage for GPS navigation systems, MP3 players, PDAs (personal digital assistants), DSL (digital subscriber line), DVD, CD-RW, modems, disk drives and other communication and networking applications.
The three new devices, along with the rest of SST's 39 series, are based on the core feature set of the MPF family--a family that was created using a fine granularity architecture and the simple CMOS-compatible manufacturing process of SST's SuperFlash(R) technology. The result is a product family with an optimized feature set that addresses the industry's mainstream applications more cost-effectively. The new x16 MPF devices were designed using a small, uniform sector architecture of 4 KByte (2 KWord) which provides better software granularity to system designers. These products also offer a large, uniform block erase capability (32 KWord/64 KByte) for faster erase operation. The new products offer fast programming and erase speeds of 20 microseconds per Word for programming; 25 milliseconds (ms) for sector/block erase and 100 milliseconds (ms) for chip erase. The fast program and erase operation results in a reduced manufacturing cycle and hence lowers the manufacturing cost.
"Our 39 series MPF product family has been a very successful product family for SST ever since we first introduced it in late 1998," said Kumar Prabhat, marketing manager at SST. "So far, our total shipments of 39 series MPF products has reached tens of millions of units. This new expansion provides our customers with a seamless migration path from 2 Mbit to 16 Mbit flash in the x16 organization, with the same packages and pinouts, thereby avoiding costly redesigns."

About SuperFlash Technology
SST's SuperFlash technology is a NOR type, split-gate cell architecture which uses a reliable thick-oxide process with fewer manufacturing steps resulting in a low-cost, nonvolatile memory solution with excellent data retention and higher reliability. The split-gate NOR SuperFlash architecture facilitates a simple and flexible design suitable for high performance, high reliability, small or medium sector size, in- or off-system programming and a variety of densities, all in a single CMOS-compatible technology.
