Jack- Also thanks for the article. I just saw this today about Infoseek getting the position as search engine for Sun's Global Intranet. I thought this was Verity's angle and yet everyone says that Verity's competition does not include Infoseek etc. but is instead Fulcrum. Am I missing something or is this just a new foray by the internet search engine companies into the intranet?
Sun Chooses Ultraseek Server for its Superior Speed, Features and Ease-Of-Use
For Searching and Indexing Sun's Global Intranet

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Infoseek Corporation
(NASDAQ:SEEK) today announced that Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) has
selected Infoseek's Ultraseek Server, the corporate Web search and index
application as the exclusive search application for Sun's worldwide Intranet.
The Sun Intranet includes over one million Web documents on more than 2,000
servers, and is growing daily.
"We evaluated a number of possible solutions, and Infoseek was by far the
best at handling our very demanding network requirements and providing our
employees with powerful, easy-to-use search capabilities," said Bill Prouty,
director, Web Service Engineering, Enterprise Network Services, Information
Resources, Sun Microsystems. "With Ultraseek Server, our employees can find
exactly the documents they need, no matter where they are on the network. Just
as importantly, it gives our Webmasters the flexibility they need to index
(spider) a network as complex as Sun's, capture new and changing documents in
a timely fashion, and maintain the index efficiently."
Ultraseek Server, shipping since March 1997, is the ultimate search and
index application for corporations that have anywhere from 1,000 documents up
to many millions of documents distributed across multiple Web servers and
geographies. Ultraseek Server is based on Infoseek's award-winning Internet
search technology that handles more than eight million queries a day.
"We are extremely pleased in Sun's decision to use Ultraseek Server," said
Steven T. Kirsch, chairman of Infoseek Corporation. "With its leadership in
networked computing -- and one of the largest Intranets in the world -- Sun
has affirmed our goal of delivering the best search technology in the
burgeoning Intranet market. Clearly, if we can meet the needs of Sun, we are
in a good position to address the needs of the most demanding customers."

Ultraseek Handles Sun's Evolving Worldwide Intranet
Sun Microsystems' global Intranet includes Web servers throughout the U.S.
and abroad, and must be frequently indexed to ensure users are getting the
latest versions of documents when executing a search. With Ultraseek Server,
users can easily add new documents and new versions of existing documents
without worrying about re-indexing or duplication. Ultraseek Server keeps the
index updated using a minimum of network bandwidth, and allows users to easily
search from the comfort of their Web browsers. Just like the Infoseek Internet
search technology, users simply enter search criteria -- specific phrases,
keywords, or even lengthy questions -- to find the documents they need,
quickly.

Ultraseek Server Delivers Best Search, Index and Management Features
Ultraseek Server provides Sun network users with the same set of
award-winning features found with Infoseek's public Web search technology,
including:
* Ease-of-use; Ultraseek appears as a simple search box on a users' Web
browser. They can enter search criteria, use the online help button or
optional search form for complex query help. Infoseek's proprietary Natural
Language Interface allows users to enter questions just as they would ask
them.
* Accuracy; Users can set Ultraseek to search on specific phrases, require
or reject words and phrases, use "stemming," fielded searches, case sensitive
or insensitive, or mixed numbers and terms.
* Speed; Ultraseek is based on the same search engine that handles over
8 million queries a day and utilizes multithreading, parallel query execution
and distributed retrieval techniques for lightening-fast searches.

Ultraseek Server has robust administration features for the busy
webmaster, such as quick installation, and:

* Remote access capabilities; The network administrator can access
Ultraseek Server's administrative features remotely from any Web browser.
* Intelligent automation; The Infoseek Spider intelligently maintains a
real-time updated index without intervention. It calculates and adjusts each
URL revisit frequency based on how often content changes, and has several
options for directory depth, firewall access and password-protected sites. It
also easily handles duplicate documents.
