Mon 10 Jan 2000 News Release
Mr. Reg Tiessen reports
A Leitch VR Newsroom server solution has been purchased by CTV Television
Network, Toronto, for use in its Ottawa affiliate CJOH. The 24-channel
server system -- similar to one purchased earlier for CTV's Sportsnet
specialty channel -- will include ingest, edit and play-out channels to
facilitate workflow and greatly eliminate the need for videotape.
The system consists of six input channels, six NEWSflash non-linear editors
and three playout channels. The input channels will ingest material from
satellite and other sources according to a prescribed schedule running
under Sundance digital automation. The Leitch NEWSflash editors will have
instant access to the stored material, permitting quick turnaround of
edited stories. Edited timelines can be played back immediately, making for
highly efficient workflow. Media from CJOH's key feeds will be stored on
1.44 terabytes of FibreDrive storage operating on a one Gbps bandwidth
fibre channel network and providing more than 100 hours of storage of
high-quality material.
By incorporating Leitch's fibre channel arbitrated loop storage technology,
the system stores incoming material from satellite or ENG tape playback on
shared drive arrays. This universal access feature makes the material
available to all points of the newsroom at all times, completely
eliminating the need to transfer files between users. Eliminating file
transfer means an end to multiple versions of the same material and
workflow delays while data is streamed from box to box. Also reducing
production delays are features such as direct input to timeline from tape,
drag and drop editing with picons, and play out of edited timelines as they
are being finished.
Scott Hannant, executive producer for news and public affairs at CJOH-TV,
says: "NEWSFlash takes CJOH to a new level of quality. We're very excited
to have this server to simplify editing and increase efficiency. Leitch
products have a good reputation and continue to offer state-of-the-art
features."
All Leitch VR servers use state-of-the-art storage techniques and control
software to reduce single points of failure and ease media flow through the
system. Leitch's built-in software programs such as RAIDsoft, SpotBase,
RAIDelayand PlayList increase the system's versatility. Backed by an
extensive worldwide service network and incorporating VR technology, Leitch
server installations protect clients' valuable assets.
