Coherent Shipping Optical Components for DWDM Marketplace

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Coherent, Inc. (Nasdaq: COHR), today announced ComEts(TM), the first in a series of optical components for the telecom market. When integrated into DWDM network products, ComEts enhance the frequency stability of laser transmitters. This results in tighter frequency packing and increased network density. The technology can be adapted to other DWDM applications including signal multiplexing and demultiplexing.

Multiple telecom customers have tested ComEts for deployment and the first two have placed initial volume orders. Sales projections to these customers should double revenues for passive telecom componentry for fiscal year 2000. The company also announced qualification is underway at additional customer sites.

"We are delighted by the rapid acceptance and integration of our ComEts in a very demanding DWDM environment," said John Ambroseo, President of Coherent's Laser and Auburn Groups. "These products play into our core strengths of optical fabrication and coating. ComEts are produced using existing capital infrastructure, although the company is investing in automated assembly equipment at Auburn to supply projected demand."

In addition to ComEts, Coherent plans to introduce DWDM filters later this year. "There have been numerous inquiries from customers about our entry into the DWDM filter market, especially given our extensive expertise in thin-film technology," said Ambroseo. "We are focusing on yield and channel density to support the expanding needs of the marketplace."

Dr. Bernard Couillaud, Coherent's President and Chief Executive Officer commented, "ComEts represents our first entry into the DWDM market. The telecom marketplace is projected to be the single largest growth opportunity over the next decade. Coherent intends to fully leverage its unique expertise in the areas of lasers, diodes, optics, optical coatings, and fibers, in a company wide effort to make the most of this marketplace opportunity."
