Here is another point that is bothering me.

Jim offered to take a lie detector test at the beginning of the investigation and the police refused.

Now the police want to give Jim a lie detector test and Jim has refused as a matter of principle. WHY?????????

Jim's life is in shambles already, what has he got to lose? Why doesn't he try to cut a deal with the NHPD whereby if he takes the test and the machine says he is telling the truth the NHPD will call a press conference and announce to the world that Jim passed the test and his name is being taken OFF the suspect list.

On the other hand the NHPD may not want to accept this deal because of intense political pressure to "name" a new suspect. A suspect in the hand is worth two in the bush, as the police say.
