Hey, sportsfans, a projectile of some weight in the telecom space (no, not a falling I* bird) is about to be launched tomorrow morning, with potential far-reaching impact on the Q, be it negative or positive, and I can't even drum up any interest in this potential near-term significant development. Lord knows our threads are not averse to speculation, as the Holy War afforded endless battles, scars, Hagfish progeny, insults to our leader and physics-defying proclamations to tickle our fancy, titillate our sense of destiny and stoke our fires of righteous indignation.
Why, it is even eerily quiet on the Western Front, over on our beloved, albeit estranged, original thread, where not even a rather robust day could dislodge the faithful much from parlor-style, cozy talk about all manner of things. And we, here, and there, have we so exhausted ourselves in this orgy, are we so inured to this run of riches (that can be snatched away overnight), that we have become so complacent astride our perch overseeing the wireless world, surveying our domain, becoming dominant in all the far-flung colonies, except the continental home of the heathen hag?

Whither Caxton? Ramsey a mere shadow of his former self, even in his spectral presence. Walt, a ghost of Christmas past. Ruffian tends the flame, but has Jason abandoned us? And Clark, wherefore art thou? Gregg and Jim have bailed before the imperative of their respective authorities. w molloy remains faithful, and limtex (whose sky is no longer falling--this should be of great concern to all) on occasion. Harvey and BNadelson stop by anonce. Art B is off after other prey. Engineer, ever vigilant in his enforcement of the Standard, seems to mellow. Surfer Mike is distracted by the diaspora of his beloveds, and Jon hovers over his witch's brew of interest rate futures and strange tales from the diadem of the supernatural. And Maurice, did I forget Mq, who minds his own store, having safely packed his island retreat for any apocalypse.

Well, the projectile to be launched tomorrow is nothing less than VOD's announcement of its internet and mobile data strategy, as put up for public view in these fair lands during the weekend. It purports to be a structural and operational platform for the largest wireless presence in the world, and if Mannessmann is devoured, it gets, well, even larger. Indeed, it had temporarily slipped off my radar screen that VOD and Bell Atlantic had joined forces after their own nasty skirmish in the wireless space, but now they together constitute a formidable CDMA presence, along with the Air Touch refugees from PacTel. Of course, VOD also surveys the GSM domain in Euroland.

All of which is to say that it possibly was very telling that Q happened to announce, this selfsame weekend as the VOD teaser of its announcement tomorrow morning regarding its internet and mobile strategy, that it and VOD had completed beta testing on a CDMA RF overlay on a GSM network. Now, this may amount to nothing more than old liacos_samui titillating himself (did someone say masturbating) into a froth for lack of some substantive diversion on his beloved threads, but if in fact it comes to nothing as far as the Q is concerned, that is quite something indeed. Something quite disappointing in terms of tectonic shifts that we dreamt about. Do we forget so soon that we were knee deep in CDMA-overlay-on-GSM talk as recently as 10 months ago--and we would have screamed in delight if we thought it was coming to pass?

Well, I have exhausted myself with this Call to Arms.
