(GATA News) Summer's answer "is" is ? leasing & writing calls "is" not selling?
Subj: Bridge News - US Treasury Secretary Summers responds to GATA Date: 1/10/00 9:04:40 AM EST From: LePatron@LeMetropoleCafe.com To: dougak
Le Metropole members,
The following news release was just sent to me by a Cafe member:
Bridge News - Summers: No US gold reserves being sold, no plans to do so.
"...US Treasury Secretary, Lawrence Summers Saturday strongly denied allegations made by the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee (GATA) that the US government has been secretly selling its gold reserves in an attempt to try and hold down the gold prices.
... GATA, formed a year ago, claims it has evidence that the price and supply of gold are being controlled by a group of Wall Street investment houses and bullion banks, with the possible encouragement of the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury. The group alleges that the gold market is being manipulated to ensure the gold price does not rise sharply above $300 per once"
[END]
The paragraph above is right on the money, but as you all know GATA has asked questions of Secretary Summers about the leasing of US gold and writing calls against that gold position.
We never suggested that the US was selling its gold which would require Congressional approval.
