***GPRS handsets*** Maybe they saw we were planning WWeb CDMA Anita [TM] devices in 1996 with ethanol fuel cells which would act as portable cookers too and thought they'd better make sure they ran hot, but they forgot to put a switch on them for 'cool mode'.

Since CDMA is the fastest growing standard and is certain to be the 3G standard, [whether 1X, HDR, cdma2000 or the VW40 clone], I wonder whether Kyocera, Samsung, and the other 26 [or so] CDMA handset licensees are putting as much effort into GPRS handsets as they are into CDMA.

I suspect that Nokia is going flat out on GPRS and so is L M Ericsson, in a futile attempt to conjure up another huge market which they'll have most of. If they can succeed somewhat in that, they'll prolong the life of GSM a bit too.

Gee these are very, very big stakes that they are all playing for. Vodafone is making the world's biggest takeover of Mannesmann [they say], predicated on a strategy the success of which will be known 3 years from now.

These are big bets.
