Stew: As I digest the AOL/Time Warner merger news, I am compelled by the value of Gemstar in this equation. Forgetting for just a moment all the varieties of content which the new company will try to deliver to people through their television sets...the issue for them (and for any other firm similarly situated) is to provide viewers with an easy, familiar means of sifting through the hundreds (eventually thousands?)of "channels" of information, or the power of this alliance is not realized. In fact, the term channel may become obsolete as we instead target data sources which are not dependent on a broadcast date or time.

In such an environment the viewer must have a Guide. Identification, analysis, selection, storage...all traits currently of Guide + technology.

If the TV is to be the ultimate portal, then the future of Gemstar is, as you have said, amazingly bright.
