unclewest, didn't you say that sapphire is not as robust a product as SiC?

Until recently, saphire based have been brighter than SiC based. although that is not a factor in every app, CREE has closed the brightness gap. They are similar now.

SiC based have 3 main advantages imo.

The physical size is smaller.
They cost less...much less, and still allow CREE to have huge margins.
The characteristics of SiC enable the connections to be done in such a manner to make device engineering much easier. (whatever that means) :o) I am told that this is particularly important in designs where space is a limiting factor.

Not sure if I mentioned this here...I learned a few days ago about some more light bulbs being replaced by LEDs...The tail light assemblies in at least one model of the new Cadillac use LEDs.
