At the core of its IT architecture, One 2 One deploys the Amdocs Ensemble customer care and billing software application running on multiple HP 9000 V-Class UNIX servers with the Oracle 8i database. This centralised information is integrated into a PowerBuilder front-end application, with the application managed and deployed to the 2,500 end user PCs by Citrix MetaFrame running within a server farm comprising 70 Windows NT servers

Powerbuilder is a very popular application development tool in the Windows world, known for its ease in developing apps that run against relational databases. The Oracle database runs on the HP box, the Powerbuilder application runs on the NT servers, and Citrix serves the application out to the clients.

One of the biggest reasons why Citrix reduces an organization's total operating costs is that, if you make a change in the Powerbuilder application, you only have to install the change in one place. Without Citrix, you would have to run around and install the change on all 2500 client machines. On one of my old projects I was flying all over the country installing a Powerbuilder application at FAA facilities because there wasn't anyone on site who knew how to do the installs. Guess how much that cost the government.

Also note that its the server farm concept that distinguishes Citrix from some of the competitors we've discussed on the thread recently. When a new user logs in from one of the 2500 clients, the Citrix load balancing software on the server side finds the least busy of the 70 servers in the farm and assigns him to that machine. I don't think you could manage a large user base as described in this implementation without this capability.
