I've always liked Cosell, and probably would have laughed at his comment, depending upon context. Rocker's comment apparently was malicious, on the order of calling his team mate a nigger.

Now to me such words are really no great issues at all. In fact, the more I say the word "nigger," the more ridiculous it sounds. It just does not seem to have any power. But I must keep in mind how a black person might see the thing. In its historical context the word has great power to harm. The word "monkey" has the same power depending upon the context in which it is used. If a black thinks the word nigger coming from me is an insult, then it is logical that he would retaliate in some way against my use of the word. Has nothing to do with PC.

Should the black not be so uptight? Perhaps, but it is difficult for me to say. I know when the Washington Post claimed Evangelicals generally poor, ignorant automatons I was not pleased and to this day am quite happy when I hear of the Post's decreasing readership and increasing financial problems. You see, the thing depends upon context. I think one should have the right to call a black a nigger if one wants to. But one does not have a right not to be shunned by blacks or their sympathisers.
