Re the schools issue -- the old geezers down the street paid the freight when their little darlings were in school. Now it's your age group's turn to pay for theirs.

(actually, no the geezers did NOT pay - their parents paid, and their kids paid and they, in the middle paid nothing and that is the issue)

Example - a 30 year old buys an 60K house in 1975 in California and conveniently votes in a tax measure that would freeze their taxes FOREVER. They have small kids who go to the schools built up by their parents (schools were decent then). For their entire adult lives, they pay about $1000/mo in property taxes - thats it. Meanwhile schools deteriorate so badly in the next 2 decades that by the time their kids have their own children private school is the only option.
