John, In that sense anyone who goes on the subway is in control of their destiny. To jump or not to jump, that is the question. In the past Intel had the safe redoubt of the high speed group and the server parts where they had no price competition from which to launch assaults on AMD.
Now there remains only the server group of parts that is safe)for the time being) as it is the only secure profit source. Soon all parts will be in play and if they cut prices by 50% across the board it will cut ASP by even more and the ramp up of AMD sales will ensure that there will be no compensating volume ramp up for Intel to rely on, not to mention the Via assault on the low-middle sector.

So the nature of Intel's control over it's destiny has had a sea change. No longer can they sit back and safely manipulate, now they will feel it themselves and the feedback of those feeling will deter them from some actions, thuse ceding control to others to some degree.
