MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan 11 (Reuters) - Computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. said Tuesday it had launched its media server software unit, SGI Mediabase, as an Internet start-up.

The company said in a statement that it would be a significant minority shareholder in the spinoff, Kasenna Inc.

Silicon Graphics has secured more funding from venture capital firms U.S. Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures and Entertainment Media Ventures.

The investments "will enable Kasenna to further develop MediaBase and capitalise on new market opportunities," the statement said. It described Kasenna as a "pre-IPO (initial public offering) start-up that offers products and services to providers and distributors of high-quality media."

MediaBase was developed by SGI to address all aspects of media - including streaming delivery services, networking, content and operations management - from a Web-based console.
